ORIENTATION SESSIONS

The Orientation Sessions represent the preparation stage for the Model UN Session. Here is the room for some theory of international relations presented by the UNA Trainers using the modern technologies, some background information on how the process is going to continue and, certainly the breathtaking interactive process of lobbying and consultations.

The Orientation Session devoted to UN and international relations would concentrate on some most interesting and relevant issues for Model UN participant. What is UN and what role does it have in international politics? How can one country influence the decision-making at UN General Assembly or the Economic and Social Council? What are the procedures and precedents? How do the countries group in blocks and affiliations? This and other questions would be addressed, but do not expect the responses that are final. The world on international relations is complex and interdependent. The facilitators would just try to demonstrate the practices, the ways it has happened and is happening, and the trends. Final decision is yours to make.

And you receive the perfect chance for it. Blind selection using our computer technology would assign you to the country that would become 'yours'. You will represent it at the world forum of nations but before you will have to learn it - its history, current stance in international politics and the position on the issue to be discussed.

After you have mastered your country, the time comes to engage in international relations. You will already have the assignment from your Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicating what policy to pursue for the upcoming session. Now it is your task to fill the Ministry formulations with practical meaning - discuss the positions with the representatives of other countries, form coalitions, learn what is the interest of the others. In other words, do the groundwork for the Model UN session

MODEL UN SESSIONS

So, all the preparations are behind. The preliminary discussions and consultations are over and the time comes for the meeting where you would face one of the global problems or issues. International crime and poverty, the rights of the minorities and economic and social rights, the problem of refugees or nuclear non-proliferation - all are the issues that require global attention. Your task is certainly to act in accordance with UN Charter and to benefit the humankind, but also to seek and defend the interests of your country.

The meeting chambers most conducive to create the needed atmosphere usually host the Model UN Sessions organized by UNA-Georgia. Chamber of the Mayors' Office of Tbilisi, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Parliament all were proud hosts of Model UN since 1996.

The Model UN Session is conducted by the usual procedures of 'real-life' UN - be it the General Assembly, the Economic and Social Council or the Security Council. The first part of the session is usually devoted to the official debates. Here you will have the chance to test your public oration skills and convincingly demonstrate your country's position.

During the breaks in session usually the most interesting part of the consultations takes place. Presenting the draft resolutions, compromising the articles, seeking common approaches and trying to fulfill the maximum of the assignment is being expressed in a process of political bargaining and opinion sharing.

Once everything that diplomacy could have done is done the Assembly rejoins to vote on resolution.

The decision is taken and the delegates adjourn to gather again for the next session - with the lessons learnt and the skills to develop.
